EXCERPT
An editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association raised my hopes that music may become accepted in its true role as therapy.

The author, Dr. Samuel Vaisrub, quotes the poet Novalis, "Every sickness is a musical problem, every cure a musical solution." He also quotes Francis Bacon, "The poets did well to conjoin music and medicine is Apollo because the office of medicine is to tune this curious harp of man's body and to reduce it to harmony." He talks about healing ceremonies concerning the temples of Asklepois, and also (as all writers do) mentions David's harp playing to soothe Saul.

However, it is unfortunate that he writes of stopping short of identify therapy with music, and closes by reducing music to an adjunct to psychotherapy in some mental institutions. What a pity that he is not aware of the tremendous therapeutic power which music has to activate the life energy in an individual and release the suppressed curative powers, the healing force of nature within us.
